York College of Pennsylvania | First-Year Experience
As Director of First-Year Experience at York College of Pennsylvania, I recruited and trained students to serve as paid peer mentors in the First-Year Seminar program. Fellows worked alongside faculty in seminar classrooms, mentored new students, led activities and engagement events, and developed their own skills in leadership, mentoring, and communication.
This program recruited new mentors every year. Prospective mentors needed to understand what the position involved, why the work mattered, and what they could gain from the experience. Recruitment materials explained the responsibilities and qualifications of the position, while a website allowed experienced mentors to describe the program in their own voices.
To create the website profiles, I sent experienced Fellows a Google Form with questions about their work in the program, including memorable experiences, what they had learned, and the advice they would give other students considering the position. I used their responses to write individual profiles that preserved their perspectives while presenting their experiences in a consistent format. The site also recognized their accomplishments and documented the contributions they had made to the First-Year Seminar program.
There were many programs across campus competing for the best student leaders. The Fellows recruitment campaign made an unfamiliar position more concrete and appealing to prospective applicants, helping to provide a robust applicant pool every spring.
